Overview:

What is a story assessment?

Short Assessment: At Write Plan, a short assessment is a 4-page letter that identifies the overall strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript. It focuses on a manuscript's non-grammar elements such as structure, plot, character development, world-building, and pacing to help you enhance your story. A short assessment is not as detailed as our developmental editing service but is ideal if you're looking for general feedback on what works and what doesn't in your manuscript.

Full Assessment: A full assessment is a step up from a short assessment. With a full assessment, you will receive 6+ pages of feedback in the areas of theme, structure, plot, character development, world-building, pacing, dialogue, and more. A full assessment is not as detailed as our developmental editing service. To see how these services compare, view the chart here.

Why do I need a story assessment?

As writers, we've spent countless hours plotting and drafting our books. Without a fresh perspective, this makes us unaware of our manuscripts' weak points, resulting in missed opportunities to strengthen our stories. Before you go through with a full developmental edit, an assessment will help you identify the weakest areas of your story. This will save you money by allowing you to strengthen the manuscript's foundation before handing it off to a developmental editor.

A story assessment can also come in handy after you've hired a developmental editor. During the developmental editing stage, a lot will change in your manuscript. After the heavy revisions of developmental editing, it may be worth having a story assessment to ensure your revisions are as strong as they can be.

Payment Plans

Unlike many editing companies, we prefer creating custom payment plans for authors to make our services more accessible. Our payment plans are flexible to fit your needs. If you are interested in a payment plan, please let us know that when you fill out a contact form. We do require that 40% of the project's total amount is paid before we begin edits.

Please note that for projects with payment plans, turnaround is 23 months.

If you wish to pay the full amount upfront to secure a 4-week turnaround instead, you are welcome to do so.

*Write Plan only offers payment plans for full assessments. Short assessments must be paid in full.

Reserve an Editing Date in Advance

To reserve an editing date ahead of time, we require a $100 non-refundable deposit to secure a spot in our schedule. The $100 will be deducted from the project's final total.

How to Pay

Write Plan will send an electronic invoice, which can be paid via credit card or secure bank payment.
