What is beta reading?
Beta reading can come either before or after a developmental (content) edit. It's the stage in which a test reader reads your manuscript to see whether your manuscript appeals to your audience. Beta reading focuses on a manuscript's non-grammar elements such as structure, plot, characterization, world-building, and pacing to help you enhance your story.
Why do I need a beta reader?
As writers, we've spent countless hours plotting and drafting our books. This makes us blind to our manuscripts' weak points, resulting in missed opportunities to strengthen our stories. Before you go through with a full developmental edit, hire a beta reader to help you identify the weakest areas of your story. Hiring a beta reader before a developmental editor will help you save money by allowing you to fix the manuscript's more obvious weaknesses before handing it off to a developmental editor.
Beta readers also come in handy after you've hired a developmental editor. During the developmental editing stage, a lot will change in your manuscript. After the heavy revisions of developmental editing, it may be worth having a beta reader look at your manuscript to ensure your revisions are as strong as they can be.
What should I expect from Write Plan?
Our goal is to help you grow as a writer by giving you feedback to enhance your story. Our beta reading services are a few steps down from a full developmental edit. Instead of the 6+ pages of feedback you'd get in a developmental editing round, you'll receive 1-2 pages of feedback covering the main strengths and weaknesses of your story. We will work closely with you throughout the process including post-revisions so you can get the most out of your editing and publishing experience.
For a full beta read of your manuscript, turnaround is 3 weeks unless stated otherwise. (See the price chart below.)
Unlike many editing companies, we prefer creating custom payment plans for clients to make our services more accessible. Our payment plans are flexible to fit your needs. If you are interested in a payment plan, please fill out the contact form at the bottom of this page to get in touch. We do require that 40% of the project's total amount is paid before we begin edits. This can be done either through a lump sum down payment or by starting the payment plan in advance.
If you wish to pay the full amount upfront, you are welcome to do so.
How to Pay
Write Plan will send an electronic invoice, which can be paid via credit card or secure bank payment.
